When we were coming close to the end of The Brothers Karamazov, it was December and we decided to do something of a festive read. Charles Dickens, A Christmas Carol was our ornament of choice. Reading the book, and of course watching the films A Muppet’s Christmas Carol and Scrooged in preparation, I was surprised by the social commentary in the novel that I hadn’t noticed before. Much like Dostoevsky, Dickens was concerned with the industrialization and capitalistic changes affecting the fabric of society. Rather than couching the narrative in a picturesque rural vista we are trudging through the streets and alleys of London.
