Gatsby was our first solid, “I read that in high school” read. And it reads a little differently now that I’m older. It’s a novel that wrestles with many of the great idols of the American Dream. The success, the money, the affluence. Having the 20 years post high school experience of life has given me a lot of perspective on these idols. The idols that Nick Caraway is discovering through its pages and the idols that reveal the hollowness of Gatsby and the vapid wrath of Tom and Daisy Buchanan. Its a novel though that leaves the reader wanting more. I kinda wish we had read this right before East of Eden.
