2026 is only just dawning and I am already dreaming about the book list for 2027. In my time researching for The Great Gatsby, I learned that during WW2 the government had a program called ASE (Armed Services Edition) that provided cheap paperback novels to those who were serving. It was one of those historical factors that gave The Great Gatsby a greater exposer, it being one of the more popular novels with the soldiers, sailors and marines. But the novel A Tree Grows in Brooklyn was the most popular with service members. Its a book that has also been recommended by several of our book club members, and I have never read it.
So I am seriously considering building our book club lineup in 2027 around A Tree Grows in Brooklyn. I’d also like to throw in something Russian, we started this club with The Brothers Karamazov, so maybe Fathers and Sons, Doctor Zhivago or The Master and the Margarita?
